Hugo has an intimate understanding of what new and experienced screenwriters are up against in trying to penetrate the spec (uncommissioned) script marketplace. In such a competitive industry, good is the enemy of great!

He provides one-to-one script consultations to new and established writers for Focus West, a project funded by the London Development Agency for writers in central London.

His approach to script development is somewhat unconventional – write in the first instance for the script reader not the screen. He argues that agents, producers and industry “gate-keepers” are so swamped with unsolicited scripts that what they want is a fantastic, uninterrupted read, something that grabs them and won’t let go, something they enjoy reading.

He first gets writers to develop their stories free from the highly formated and often formulaic craft of screenwriting. They must use all their senses to create a dynamic three-dimensional world where action comes first and dialogue last.

Got a good idea but can’t translate it into screen language?
You may be too stuck on traditional filmwriting modules. Strict formating and creative structure come second and can be mastered fairly easily but can't be used effectively until the writer knows his or her story inside out.
